Your Voice Matters: Focus Groups at RVUUF

What is a focus group?

A focus group is simply a small, guided conversation with RVUUF members and friends from different segments of our congregation. About 6–10 people gather with a facilitator to talk about their experiences, ideas, and hopes related to a particular topic. You do not need to be a member to share your opinion.

Only one group still has space available. It’s the one for younger friends and members. We’re saying “under 40[ish.” It will be after the service on Sunday, May 5. If you fit that group we’d love to hear from you, and here’s the link to sign up.

Other groups included one for LGBTQ members and attendees; two groups for people who’ve attended RVUUF for more than 5 years; one for people who have attended less than 5 years; and one for occasional attendees.

Instead of filling out a survey alone, participants build on each other’s thoughts. One person’s comment sparks another person’s memory or insight, and the conversation often reveals things that wouldn’t come up otherwise.

Why are we holding focus groups?

RVUUF leaders want to hear from many different voices within the community. Focus groups help us do that by creating space for people with shared experiences to reflect together.

These conversations help us understand questions like:

  • What helps people feel connected here?
  • What barriers sometimes get in the way of participation?
  • What kinds of programs, community life, or outreach would people love to see more of?

Focus groups don’t produce votes or decisions. Instead, they help us notice patterns, themes, and ideas that can guide future planning.

How will the focus groups work?

Each group will:

  • Include a small number of participants
  • Last about 90 minutes
  • Be guided by a facilitator with prepared questions
  • Focus on listening and shared reflection

Participants don’t need any special knowledge or preparation. The most helpful thing you can bring is simply your honest experience of our community.
