Sunday services, May 2016

Here’s a look at services taking place in May 2016. Services take place at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday in RVUUF’s Great Hall. Gathering music begins at 10:25 a.m.

May 1: All Lifted Hearts
The Living Tradition we share as UU’s draws from many sources. The third source is wisdom from the world’s religions, which inspire us in our ethical and spiritual life. The choir will sing the third movement, “All Lifted Hearts,” of the UU Cantata composed by Rev. Jason Shelton. Rev. White’s sermon title is “All Lifted Hearts.”

May 8: Mothers Peace Day
Rev. White will speak about the tradition of Mothers Day and the role of Julia Ward Howe who called for a day of peace in the midst of war. The sermon title is “Mothers Peace Day.” Following this service is a congregational informational meeting.

May 15: Our Electronic Altar
Followers. Inspiration. Guidance. Community. Expressions of faith. Teachings from religious leaders. Church, right? In a way. It’s also all in social media—Facebook, Twitter, Periscoping, YouTube—to name a few. We’ll explore how social media has become the new electronic altar, its personal pluses … and challenges, and its relationship to our UU principles. This service will be led by Gordon O’Hara and Arthur Ellis, members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Grants Pass. The recipient of May’s third-Sunday offering will be Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Jackson County.

May 22: Flower Communion
The traditional Flower Communion will be led by Rev. White and celebrated by everyone bringing a flower to exchange to this special Sunday service. Following the service is the annual congregational meeting for voting members.

May 29: Memorial Day
Decoration day began after the Civil war and has continued to this day. A day to honor military dead, a day to gather at grave sites and place flowers but the military dead are not our only war dead. Today we want to consider all the casualties of war.
