Social Justice theme highlights ‘Poor People’s Campaign.’

Each year, the RVUUF Social Justice and Action (SJ&A) Committee chooses a theme that it uses to guide its thoughts and actions. For 2018-2019, SJ&A has chosen to partner with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, which is now being revitalized 50 years after it was launched by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968.

The Poor People’s Campaign (PPC) focuses on four major topic areas: Systemic Racism, Poverty and Inequality, The War Economy and Militarism, and Ecological Devastation. The Poor People’s Campaign is creating a mass movement of Americans who insist on the need to examine these issues from a moral perspective and to take action to solve them.

The PPC is endorsed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice. Over the next year, SJ&A will find ways for congregants to be informed and involved.

The Souls of Poor Folk is a historical, evidence-based audit of American society that traces 50 years since 1968, when Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and thousands of Americans launched the Poor People’s Campaign. The full report can be downloaded as a PDF.
