On Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 the RVUUF Board met and unanimously approved the Search Committee’s unanimous decision to hire Rev. Sean Parker Dennison as RVUUF’s Developmental Minister.
Board president Jim Meckel announced the decision during the Sunday, Aug. 13 service, and Rev. Sean will observe office hours at RVUUF, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Rev. Sean is a graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry and was ordained in 2000. He has served interim ministries in Stockton and San Luis Obispo, Calif., a sabbatical ministry in Palo Alto, settled ministries in Salt Lake City, Utah and McHenry, Ill., and also served as an intern minister at the UU Church of Berkeley.
Rev. Sean’s partner, the Rev. Theresa Ines Soto, serves as interim minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Flint, Mich.
Alongside his congregational work, Rev. Sean has served Unitarian Universalism in a number of ways. He was part of the Accountability Team for 2012’s “Justice” General Assembly in Phoenix, Ariz.; the Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Committee; and the Board of Trustees of Starr King School for the Ministry. He was chosen to present the 2015 Berry Street Essay, which, he said, “was a real honor.”
Rev. Sean also co-founded Transgender Religious Professional UUs Together (TRUUsT), a support and advocacy group for transgender and gender non-conforming UU religious leaders. Occasionally, Rev. Sean shares the story of his own transition (now 20 years ago) in classrooms and at conferences as a part of his ministry, and encourages: “If you’d like to know more about that part of my story, just ask.”
Rev. Sean also describes himself as “an artist (painting, poetry, and photography) and a bit of a geek. I consider my presence on social media an important part of my ministry and I’ve been posting a daily prayer on Twitter and Facebook since 2011.”
Beginning Sept. 12, Rev. Sean will be in the office at RVUUF on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Monday will be my day off and Friday will be my writing day. If you’d like to meet, it’s best to call first to make an appointment to make sure I am available. I am looking forward to getting to know you!”
