President’s Post: Life is precious

I am a lame duck president and soon RVUUF will have another Board president. But I intend to stay on the Board another year.

On March 10, Rev. Nan, Jan Waitt and I met to discuss Thanksgiving dinner. Jan had researched the public Christmas dinner sponsored by the Christian Church at the armory. They feed 800 people with a budget of $5,000. Jan will continue to coordinate RVUUF’s private Thanksgiving dinner and we will explore options for a public one. If you would like to work on this, please contact me.

The scouting ritual for Wyatt Davis brought tears to my eyes and those of many others. It truly made our community feel like a family… intimate and precious.

A big thank you to Linda Stevenson who led the Congregation Information meeting on March 6 with dignity and poise.

“Children and Youth Sunday” with the teen theater was very special. I am impressed that these young presenters deeply embody our UU principles.

On March 12, 12 RVUUFians joined our Muslim brothers and sisters at their Mosque in Talent for a potluck dinner. It was an evening of sharing food, information and our hearts. I was glad to hear that the people of Talent have supported their Muslim neighbors. This Muslim community appreciates our support in the face of the violence perpetrated by fanatics. The next step in this relationship, is to invite the Muslims to a potluck at RVUUF so that more of our congregants can meet them.

The loss of Mike Evans reminds me of how precious life is… the importance of cherishing friends, family and each day. Recently Rabbi Joshua said at our Buddhist retreat, “We’re all on a sinking ship.” None of us know how many days we have left. As we age, we become aware of having less energy and time. We become more circumspect about how we spend these precious commodities. We ask ourselves,” What is worth my time and energy? In what ways can I express my caring and love for others?”
