The 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign re-awoke a discussion about something which had, for many years, been a kind of taboo in America: Socialism. Like his contemporaries in the UK (Jeremy Corbyn), in Bolivia (Evo Morales), and Greece (the Syriza Party), Sanders’ historic campaign showed that socialism and its ideas are having a modern rebirth. Socialism, in large part based on the works of Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels among many others, has spread to every country on the planet. It has been both praised and vilified throughout the world. But what is socialism? Is it a viable alternative to Capitalism? What do some of the Left traditions of thought have in common, and how can their insights help us confront some of the greatest threats humanity has ever faced?
