July’s 3rd Sunday Recipient for July: The UU Service Committee

Our 3rd Sunday recipient will be the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). The UUSC originated in 1939 when Reverend Waitskill Sharpe and Martha Sharpe traveled to Germany to assist Jewish people and other groups in leaving the country. Since then, the UUSC has evolved into a wide-ranging international service organization that addresses human rights, social justice, environmental issues, and natural disaster responses. While there are many excellent international aid organizations, UUSC is unique as they work primarily through partnering with local indigenous organizations. They follow the lead of these local groups; providing support while recognizing that local leaders often have the best knowledge for how to address local problems.

While the UUSC often works closely with the UUA, they’re a separate organization with their own Board, CEO, and independent 501c3 status. For more information, including several examples of their ongoing partnerships, you can view a video that the UUSC recently developed.
