Jordan Cove Energy Project, letter-signing and rally to oppose

The Interfaith Social Justice Coalition and Rogue Climate are opposing the “Jordan Cove Energy Project,” which would build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Coos County, and a natural gas pipeline through Coos, Jackson, Klamath, and Douglas counties.

The coalition and Rogue Climate are submitting a letter to the Oregon Department of State Lands. Diane Werich reported, “We have 65 RVUUFian signatures and we hope to double that this week after service.”

People are also being asked to attend a public hearing about the project, taking place Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Jackson County Expo, 1 Peninger Road in Central Point. Ms. Werich said that carpools will leave at 4 p.m. from RVUUF, 87 Fourth St. in Ashland; and from United Church of Christ, 717 Siskiyou Blvd. in Ashland.

A rally will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the Olsrud Room at the Jackson County Expo, and the public hearing will take place at the Expo’s Padgham Pavilion. Rally organizers are offering free pizza and free T-shirts, and will provide an information station to help with writing comments about the impacts of Jordan Cove. Sign-ups to deliver testimony at the hearing will begin at 5:15 p.m.

“Wear red,” Ms. Werich added. “If the permits are denied to bulldoze wetlands, the project is finished. Another chance to heal our broken world.” For more information, use RVUUF’s contact form to connect with Ms. Werich.
