The Interfaith Social Justice Coalition meets from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14, at Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 87 Fourth St. in Ashland. Representatives of Options for Homeless Residents of Ashland and the Winter Shelter Program have been invited to talk about plans to address a crisis for sheltering Ashland’s homeless population next winter.
Pioneer Hall will no longer be available as a winter shelter. During the season just ended, it was used four days per week. But the City of Ashland, which owns the hall, has been told that it is structurally unsound, and also that a fire sprinkler system is required for further overnight use. The cost of these remediations is prohibitive.
Come learn what alternatives are from homeless activists who are working on them. Coalition-member congregations’ support will almost certainly be needed for a successful outcome. The coalition will brainstorm the most effective ways they can support the campaign to find a one-site shelter for next winter and to eventually find a permanent one site shelter and resource center.
