‘Five Jagged Rocks’ of UU core beliefs

I recently accessed a recorded webinar with Eric Bliss, youth ministry specialist for the UUA’s Pacific Western Region. He invited sharing widely these statements of UU theology, its “Five Jagged Rocks” or core beliefs.

1. There is a Unity that makes us one
2. All Souls are sacred and worthy
3. Salvation in THIS life
4. Courageous love transforms the world
5. Truth continues to be revealed to us

Mr. Bliss contrasted these five beliefs with the UU Seven Principles, which he described as “ethical statements.”

UUs, he said, have five core beliefs from seven principles, six sources and more than 1,000 years of religious heritage. Knowing this may be of value to our children (and even UU adults) when asked by someone just what it is they believe as a UU.

For more information, I recommend an essay by Jennica Davis Hockett via Blue Boat/UUA Blogs. In it, Ms. Hockett elaborates on each of the “Five Jagged Rocks” of essential UU theology.
