Social Justice and Action
The Social Justice and Action (SJA) Committee supports RVUUF’s mission to “Embrace Diversity, Empower Connection & Engage in the Work.”
Justice work that arises from a religiously grounded place:
- Sustains us personally and congregationally
- Provides vision and grounding
- Gives us courage to engage in transformative work
- Helps to frame our issues authentically and morally
- Reflects our most deeply held values and beliefs
- Increases our clarity and effectiveness
- Allows us to speak with a religious voice and demonstrate that there is a plurality of religious beliefs that can come together for action.
SJA meets on the third Sunday of each month in the RVUUF Conference Room from noon until 1pm.
Use RVUUF’s contact form to connect with the Social Justice and Action Committee, and sign up for our weekly email News to Note to keep up with happenings in the RVUUF community, including SJA updates.
Ongoing SJA Projects:
Third-Sunday offering – SJA selects a non-profit group to be the recipient of collection-plate offerings during the third Sunday of each month. SJA selects ten local 501(c)3 agencies to be third-Sunday offering recipients. The remaining two recipient organizations include the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and one other global organization.
Non-profit group tabling – Groups or individuals must receive approval in advance from the SJA to obtain signatures or provide information for one half-hour following Sunday services. Only non-profit groups will be allowed to table. Commercial enterprises, partisan political groups or campaigning by those seeking election are not allowed. Organizations must provide their own table and supplies, which will be set up on the covered front outside entry area to the right of the front doors. At its discretion, the SJA may authorize an exception for the use of any other area.
Supporting social-justice work in the community – SJA works with groups in the community to make space in our building available for social justice meetings and events when possible. We were a founding member of the Ashland Interfaith Social Justice Coalition, where folks of many different faiths come together to work for justice in Ashland and the Rogue Valley.
