Yarn Service Group 2025 Update

Did you know that RVUUF has a Yarn Service Group? Victoria Leo started the group, formerly known as Creative Comforts, in 2013 when she moved to Ashland. Patty Duggan and others, whether members of RVUUF or not, joined in. Using donated yarn, the group creates warm scarves, hats, neck warmers, ear warmers, food warmers, lap blankets, blankets, and cozies/bags for adults. They also work on baby blankets, hats, and stuffed animals for kids. The work is focused on function over fanciness, and they prefer to use washable, hardy materials and stitches. The group is typically able to donate over 100 items per year!

Items are created both by knitting and crocheting. The work takes place year round, and members often use TV or other ‘relaxing’ time as an opportunity to work, as well as ‘wasted, waiting’ time such as being in line at the DMV or waiting for an appointment.

In 2025 the group is on track to donate over 120 warm items to RVUUF and the surrounding community. These donations included 40 items to Meals on Wheels and 15 to the Senior Center for low-income and unhoused elders. Another 50 warm items are being prepared for Access with a scheduled donation date of October 31. Any items created in November and December go to the Food Bank for food-insecure families.

Every year Victoria shares updates about the group in News to Note, getting the word out about the work our Fellowship does to help keep our neighbors in the Valley warm during the cold months. Now in 2025, Victoria is working with one enthusiastic non-member volunteer and two intermittent RVUUFians. They do their very best to be of service, providing yarn-created garments not only to RVUUF members in physical or emotional need, but also to the larger community.

If you can do a simple knit or crochet stitch, or want to learn, consider joining the Yarn Service Group! Interest or ability with intermittent sewing or quilting is also welcomed. Other ways to support the group is spreading the word about the need for more knitters and crocheters, donating yarn, or simply keeping the group in your thoughts and prayers. “Everyone helps in the ways they can and everyone is part of the victory. So I firmly believe,” says Victoria. If you know a member who is in need of warmth or the cheering up that a simple gift could give, let Victoria Leo know, especially if you can pick up and deliver for her.

You’re all part of the victory! If you’re interested in contributing, please contact Victoria Leo at 253-653-5995.
