Meet at RVUUF at noon to carpool to "Newell's Nob" off Shale City Road to hike with Environmental Action. Never heard of this site? It's informally named BLM land near Grizzly Peak, but hardly anyone has gone there in modern times other than our own Diane "Newell" Meyer, who knows it well and wants to share the beauty of its scarps, vistas, and ponds with us. We will actually take a series of short hikes to better explore the area, much as we did with the nearby roadless part of Grizzly Peak (stewardship project 2001-03). There may be stewardship possibilities at Newell Nob too, but we're just going to explore and enjoy it Sept. 20th. For the trip and short hikes, you'll need long pants, sturdy shoes or boots, water, and a late lunch or snacks. Wear or bring layers, because it could be colder up there (above 5,000 ft.).
