Neighbor to Neighbor Project

We believe that One-to-One relationships are the keystone to building a just and peaceful world. Neighbor to Neighbor is a telephone outreach project to link lives and build connections. It is grounded in UU Principles

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person, and
  2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, and
  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregation.

Our goal is to build a stronger Fellowship community as we commit to connect in a personal, concrete way on a regular daily to weekly basis with another RVUUF member or RVUUF friend, demonstrating that we are community every day, and not just when we see one another on Sunday or occasionally at other times. Neighbor to Neighbor provides volunteers with a spiritual practice that demonstrates that we truly matter to each other. It is a way of keeping a connection alive and growing, especially for those who are unable to attend our service every week. Those signing up to be called may be older members who can’t come to the fellowship often, shy people, new people, people facing challenges, people who are caregivers, and people who simply seek connection. You can sign up to be either a caller or a receiver of a call.

There are established guidelines, as well as a process for reporting issues encountered which may require referral of some kind. A coordinator will maintain a master list of caller-receivers, but follow through on the commitment will be a personal responsibility.

To sign up, download, fill-in, and email form (address in form) [.doc];
or print, fill-in, and return form to Office [.pdf].

The Role of the Activitist and of Faith Communities in Achieving Justice

standing on the side of loveBeth Coye, a pioneer in helping to bring about equality and justice for U.S. military minorities (women and gays), will describe her personal journey which included living as a closeted lesbian in the Navy for over 20 years. She was instrumental in bringing about change for military women, and in retirement she continued working to bring about changes in our military bureaucracies and personnel structures regarding military gays. Beth has asked that congregants wear their yellow Standing on the Side of Love T-shirts.

coming out in faithIn December 2010 Congress passed an historic civil rights statute which gives equality and freedom to military gays and lesbians. As a member of the core activist group which led the charge for change, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, Beth and others worked for years to bring down discriminatory policies and laws.

What is the backstory to this event? What is the role of the activist? What does it take to be an activist, speaking out against the majority? What is the role of faith communities in taking down unjust bureaucracies and structures? ....

After the service there will be a booksigning of the newly-released Skinner House/Beacon Press book, Coming Out in Faith: Voices of LGBTQ Unitarian Universalists. The book presents 15 remarkable essays written by Unitarian Universalists, 8 of whom are ministers. Copies will be available for $8 (normally $14).

foodSun, Jul 10, noon. It is now time to start the process of signing up volunteers for the times RVUUF will be responsible for staffing the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. For that purpose there will be a brief (30 min.) orientation meeting on Sunday July 10 after the service.

To help those interested plan ahead, RVUUF will need to provide three volunteers on each Monday in September, October, November and December. Some procedures have changed, so it will be necessary for all those interested, even if you have volunteered before, to attend this meeting.

The meeting on July 10 will feature the showing of an illustrative DVD, sign-up sheets and a verbal presentation. The Food Bank thanks you for offering your services and hopes that you will embrace the changes as other faith groups have done since January. Contact Herb Petschek if you have questions.
